Honda Insight Vs Toyota Prius

The Honda Insight and the Toyota Prius are two of the most popular hybrids in the world. The Insight is on its second generation. It was the first hybrid introduce in the US in 1999. (2000 model year)  The Toyota Prius can out one year later and has been the best selling hybrid by far worldwide. Both are good option depending on what you are looking for in your hybrid.

How do they work?

Hybrid means "combination of two" in its simplest. For our purposes here it teams a gas engine with and electric motor to power the car. Honda use something called IMA or Integrated Motor Assist while a system called Synergy Drive. For an in depth explanation on how these exactly work, check the perspective web sites.

We will keep it simple here and break it down like this: Honda's system uses the gas engine as its main power source and the electric motor as its assist. The Toyota uses the electric motor as its main ssource and the gas engine is secondary.

How do they drive?

With these two technologies, the Insight tends to feel like you are driving a normal automobile and the Prius tends to feel like you are driving something a little bit different. Not different in a bad way, it just does not feel like you are driving a normal car.

Which one has the better price?

The Honda Insight is the most affordable hybrid on the market with a starting price of $19,800 and topping out a $23,800. The Prius starts at $21,000 and can top out close to $30,000.

Which one gets better fuel efficiency?

The Prius is the winner in this category. The Prius currently has an EPA rating of 51 city and 48 on the highway. This is due to the fact you can drive the Prius on only electric at slower speeds. The Insight comes in at 40 city 43 highway from the EPA, but this is a little misleading. This rating is for when you turn the vehicle on and drive, but the vehicles has an Eco mode too. What this does is changes the way some of the vehicle systems work, giving you less power, but better fuel efficiency. Many tests show that it can get you over 50mpg in the Eco Mode.

How are these two when it comes to safety?

The Toyota Prius and Honda Insight received the exact same NHTSA crash test scores. 5 stars in front driver and side driver crash tests and 4 stars in front passenger and rollover tests.

How do the technology components compare?

Both have some pretty cool tech features. Both have a system that can show you how you are driving and how you can be more efficient and squeeze out a few more miles per gallon.  Both have a Bluetooth option for say hands free driving and navigation systems that are voice activated.

So there you have it, both are great options. If you do not have a lot of money, but still want a hybrid, the Insight is a good bet. If you are looking for more the best gas mileage and want to go the hip and trendy way, the Prius might be the choice for you.
