Honda Pilot Vs Toyota Highlander

The best mid size to large SUVs on the market are no doubt the Honda Pilot and the Toyota Highlander. The Honda Pilot was introduced to the United States for the 2003 model year. It is currently in its 2nd generation. The Highlander came out right around the same time and offers a few more options, like a 4 cylinder and V-6 option, as well as a hybrid option.

Seating Capacity

Both vehicles offer a 3rd row of seats and with seat 8 passengers.

Where are they made?

The Honda Pilot is made at the Honda plant in Lincoln, Alabama.  The Highlander is currently being built in Japan, but feature models are soon to be built in Princeton, Indiana.

What is the price?

The Pilot's base price is around $28,000 and tops out fully load at just under $41,000. The Highlander starts at just over $25,000 and top out around $38,000.

What are the styling features?

The redesigned Pilot looks looks much more 'boxier' and 'rougged' than the first generation. The Highlander shares that rugged look, but has a little bit more of a rounded look to it.

How about the interior features?

The Pilot's interior is bigger than the previous version. There is definetly more head and leg room, especially in the thrid row of seats. An adult can actually fit pretty comfortably in that 3rd row. The Highlander has all the same features and includes a 40/20/40 split for the rear seats.

How do these vehicles perform?

The new Pilot has more horsepower and gets better gas mileage than the previous generation. It is available in 2 or 4 wheel drive and has a Variable Cylinder Management system to achieve that fuel efficiency. The Highlander shares its basic chassis components with the Camry and Sienna. I comes in 2WD or 4WD and has a4 cylinder option to go along with the V-6. If you re into being green and want a large vehicle, the Highlander also has hybrid version.

Safety

The Pilot received top scores from the NHTSA and the IIHS in all categories and was named a 2009 Top Safety Pick by the IIHS. The Highlander would have received a perfect score from the NHTSA, but a 4 star rollover rated squashed that. The IIHS named the Highlander an IIHS Top Safety Pick for 2009.
